18 Questions to Ask a Pet Transport Company

We recently relocated to New Zealand, from New Hampshire USA. Moving around the world is hard enough but planning the transport of, not one but, two very large dogs is a challenge. From the beginning to the very end, Starwood Pet Travel guided our every move. We worked with Sage, who was friendly, extremely knowledgeable, and a quick responder. All details were handled down to the finest point and the transport went forward smoothly.

It was hard to be away from Fergus and Silas for so long but the quarantine facility provided frequent updates and photos, which helped us feel connected to the boys. Our reunion was happy, the dogs looked great! Since our reunion, Fergus and Silas have not left our side. As senior dogs, we were worried about their flight and time spent in quarantine, but Fergus and Silas seem rejuvenated. Coming from New Hampshire, where the weather is not as pleasant, they are loving the temperate climate. We are taking them on long walks, through lush parks and sandy beaches.

Fergus and Silas have never walked so much before in their whole lives! Thank you Sage, and Starwood Travel, for guiding us through this experience and providing such attentive care to our canine family members. They are SO HAPPY to be with us. We are looking forward to our future here together!

Without Starwood Pet Travel, I really believe our attempt to transport our dog Lucas from Los Angeles to London Heathrow would have been a disaster. There were so many ways to get something wrong, and our coordinator Cassidy guided us and the veterinary clinic performing the health certificate through the process with amazing calm, competence, and professionalism. On top of all that, Lucas was transported to LAX by Starwood Pet Travel, then at the end of his flight, an affiliate collected him from Heathrow and drove him a considerable distance to my relatives in Britain, who looked after him for a few days until we also arrived and were settled in our new home. He is now enjoying his new life in Britain, seemingly unaffected by his adventure over the Atlantic. I can't recommend Cassidy and Starwood Pet Travel enough. They were worth every penny.

Starwood, especially Rosemary, was very reliable, knowledgable and helpful. Always positive and brimming with confidence in the whole event (which was scary for me as such an ordeal for the pups). All went well in the end of course and we are home!

Great experience moving my 2 kitties from Seattle to Northern Italy! Cassidy was very helpful and responsive and the whole process was a breeze.

Starwood maintained good communication, I was able to book phone calls and email with my travel coordinator Sarah whenever needed; she was very responsive. My 9 year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel made it without any issue from the US to the UK. Starwood handled the necessary paperwork and assisted with vet coordination as well as booking the travel in between. Lufthansa Cargo rescheduled my dog's flight just a few days beforehand to two days later than the original date, and Starwood helped manage the rescheduling. I would use them again.

I am extremely glad that I decided to go with an experienced company for my move from Philly to outside London for my two cats. It truly helped with my stress and it was so worth it to have the cats picked up and delivered to the new house. Moving our 2-year-old Vizsla, Sophie, from Detroit to Edinburgh (via Frankfurt) felt like a daunting task, but Starwood Pet Travel made it a breeze. We worked closely with Sarah, who was truly incredible from start to finish. She went above and beyond to ensure we felt prepared and calm throughout the entire process. International pet travel has so many moving parts, but Sarah’s communication—both during the planning stages and while Sophie was in transit—was world-class. Knowing Sophie was in such capable hands took a massive weight off our shoulders. Starwood was very thorough and made certain that every bit of paperwork was correctly completed by me and the vet who completed the requirements. They liaised with the vet personally and with the company in South Africa, who saw the kitties through customs. Starwood did everything they promised and when we didn't hear from the airline, they contacted them to check up on progress. Unfortunately, Lufthansa left their original paperwork in Atlanta (Starwood could not have prevented that) and so my kitties were delayed in Germany for 2 days. Starwood kept me informed throughout the process. My kitties were a bit thin when they arrived at my house, but as anyone who has cats knows, if a cat won't eat, it won't. Nothing anyone can do.

We are so grateful for Starwood's, and especially Rosie's, support in transporting our four cats from the US to New Zealand. We've got a lot of pets with unique medical needs and temperaments and New Zealand has an incredibly complex import process. Rosie and the Starwood team handled it all with patience, kindness, respect, and transparency. Rosie's calm and responsiveness throughout the process was so helpful and it was clear she understood what our pets mean to us. All four made it through their travel and quarantine safely and smoothly and are now home with us and back to their usual routines. The pet portal and CareTag tracking were also a great help!

We used Starwood for the move of our cavapoo Onyx from DC to Singapore. He'd never flown before nor was he used to kennels. However, the Starwood team was brilliant, with special thanks to Ryan for all the terrific help. From getting him used to the kennel to the making the cumbersome paperwork a seamless process and arranging the necessary vet appointments, all went extremely smoothly with personal attention to Onyx' needs and our many questions. Starwood Pet Travel did a great job transporting our Pomeranian from Atlanta to New Zealand. Sage, our travel advisor, was so thorough and kept in constant communication with us throughout the process. When there was an unexpected embargo that impacted our dog’s travel plans, Sage figured out a work-around that didn’t cost us any extra money and allowed our pet to arrive on time. I moved to Cape Town at the end of last year and needed to bring Loki (my French Bulldog) over. The process before Starwood felt so overwhelming but Ryan made it happen. absolutely seamless start to finish. We flew from San francisco to Amsterdam with about 8 weeks notice and the help of my coordinator Cassidy , and Danny, the handler who came to pick up my dog the morning of travel. Cassidy kept me in the loop with everything , there was actually surprisingly not a great deal to sort out (on my end) which made me very nervous because i felt like there should have been more!! but she made it SO easy you literally just have to sit back and leave her and her team to it! I also was made to feel like no question was too much trouble. I had a second leg of my travels after amsterdam which i was organizing myself ,and cassidy was so kind as to offer her expertise and advice even after her role had finished. she really does know her stuff and really does care about customer service. Danny was an angel too he was so gentle when collecting my dog (she’s very timid and nervous) and he made sure to send me so many pics of her along the way , her being checked in , having her last walk before being loaded into the plane etc - it really put my mind at ease. if i ever move internationally again in the future i will be using Starwood again and i will be recommending to anyone i know who is also planning an international move.

Absolutely overjoyed with the experience from start to finish! Ryan at Starwood did a great job of transporting our Golden Retriever from the US to Singapore to rejoin his family! So for 5 years I had been planning to move from Texas back home to the UK. And my main worry that entire time was about moving my dog Gunnar. Do not mess around with the safety of your pets. From beginning to end, the Starwood team was top of the line. You will still worry when your pets are away from you, which is why you need to get to know and trust your transport team. I was able to email and get a quick response especially during the transit time when I was worried, but Starwood kept me in the loop with every step. Moving is often filled with one issue after the other, but I wanted to make sure the issues did not relate to my cats, who were delivered to our overseas location right to our new doorstep. I cannot thank the team (Paul, Sarah, Marianna, Rita) enough. They truly treated our cats like family, and it shows in how quickly our cats are acclimating here!

Great experience transporting our dog to her new home on the other side of the world (LA to Bangkok). It was expensive and we fretted about that a bit at first but ultimately decided it was worth it for our dog and for peace of mind. Thank goodness we went with Starwood Pet! Flights were cancelled due to weather, plans had to change multiple times and our fantastic coordinator, Ryan Bole, managed all of it with calm professionalism and kindness! We had an amazing experience with Starwood. Their knowledge of the very complex proceedings helped us the whole way. In the last minute we found out that we had to send not only 1, but all of our 3 pets through Starwood.In less than 1 day, they had everything arranged and ready to go. Sarah, our Pet Travel Coordinator helped keep us calm, informed and prepared. It is an expensive process, but I do recommend Starwood if you need to transport your pets overseas. BEST DECISSION I EVER MADE!!! Tip-to-toe I trust them like family. I had many reservations at first but they happened to be the HIGHEST RATED AND TRUSTED when I asked Chat GPT and Google what I should do.I was a wreck try to figure out how to get my three gitls from San Diego to Hilo in Hawaii. Their pet portal is the most comprehensive and easiest to navigate. If you do not like constant communication then they are not for you. I was told before things happened what was getting ready to happen. The girls flight was going to be delayed and they would have to be boarded over night but i knew they were in good hands. I'm telling you, Ryan is the BEST and if her boss is reading this, SHE NEEDS A RAISE!! Period. Like I said, I was a mess trying to get everything but Ryan was always right there to answer my calls. If she was away from her desk she called right back. I will trust no one with flying ever unless its Starwood.

Starwood is one class act, from the first contact to the final text, they took care of Mandy and Brandies move from the USA to Thailand with ZERO issues. Everyone, from Ben in sales, to Piper, our personal assistant, acted like these were their fur babbies. They made sure everything was taken care of. The companies they worked with were the best as well. KLM Airways, the folks at Dulles and Schipol Airports, the driver who picked the girls up, the vets they worked with and the boarding facilities they used along the way were all outstanding. I moved from New York to Australia. I wanted to bring my two darling cats with me, and looking online showed me that Starwood was a very popular and reliable choice. I was extremely worried because Australia has some of the strictest biodiversity laws in the world, and my cats would need to be in quarantine in Melbourne for 10 days even if they had the proper veterinary documentation.With that being said, Starwood did a lot of the heavy lifting, and my coordinator Molly helped immensely with the process, explaining what needed to be done, and helping with the paperwork.

We flew our two vizslas to New Zealand from LAX with Starwood Pet Travel. They were very good about communication before, during, and after the flight. It was a stressful process and they made it as easy as they could!

The adventure was a long one. It started way before the flight working with Sarah Whittington getting Vet appointments, travel crates and info about all three. Then on 2 November They were picked up for the ride down to Red Dog Spa Retreat, we would not see them for over a week. Sarah set up the ride, the boarding and the USDA Vet appointment. We were going through a lot, selling our business, house and car all before our trip 9 November so time was short. We went with Starwood all-inclusive package because we just could not handle one more thing and our pets are our world and we wanted them to have the best trip to France. They did have one hiccup; the day they were to fly out 11 November it was to cold and windy for them to travel so Sarah had brought them back to Red Dog for one more night. She then had to reschedule not only their ride to the airport, their flight and their trip to their new home in France. Sarah took care of everything, and they were on their way the next day and were in our arms the next day. So big thanks to Sarah and Starwood.

Our move to Spain was made easier by our friends at Starwood Pet Travel. They made the transit of our 2 french bulldogs work without a hitch. There were so many things that had to happen, they made it easy.We were able to be in contact ahead of the travel and had all of questions answered, either with just a quick call, or by scheduling a meeting. Even when our pups travel changed due to a change in the airline schedule, all went well. Cassidy kept me informed of their progress during their travel. And, beforehand, was available to help ensure that all would go according to plan. Starwood was easy to work with, explaining the process, travel immigration rules of the airlines country.Our pets were skittish on the night of arrival. That day, they had flow from Frankfurt to Madrid, gone through immigration, and then a 3 1/2 hour van ride to be brought to us. Within an hour, they were back to their old selves and have been so ever since.cWe are glad for the help of Starwood, and Cassidy in particular.I cannot do anything but recommend them. Remember, you are choosing to move, your pets are not.

We are a navy family and had to ship our senior dog, Lilly, to Naples, Italy. I was very nervous because she is an anxious pup to begin with, plus her age, and she had never flown before. Not to mention the health requirements and customs paperwork are rather cumbersome! I was happy to find Starwood, working with them to have Lilly shipped from DC to Rome (via Frankfurt) and they were even able to arrange having her driven from Rome to Naples. Our main point of contact was Sarah, and she was fantastic! She answered all of my questions along the way, kept up with our own flight itinerary changing at the last minute, and was quick to send me pics of Lilly during her layover in Frankfurt. :) My only minor complaint is that the CareTags feature didn't seem to be worth much. I thought it would be a more helpful "live" type of GPS tracking, but it only got updated once over the whole 48 hours she was traveling. I got more information about Lilly's whereabouts from the Lufthansa cargo tracking page. Shipping a beloved pet is going to be stressful no matter what, but Starwood helped make the experience as seamless as it could be.

I highly recommend Starwood Pet Travel for shipping a pet to a new location, particularly for overseas travel. In our case, we shipped a large dog from the U.S. to South Korea. It was a bit complicated, as Caesar’s soldier was already in South Korea; Caesar was living with our son’s fiancé who had all the dog’s health records in PA; and I was in charge of the final travel responsibilities in OH. Before contacting Starwood Pet Travel, we found there were various restrictions specific to individual airlines, such as weight allowances, number of flying hours before a layover was required, and more. Once we found Starwood Pet Travel these concerns were no longer ours. After our initial interview, we were paired with a coordinator, Ryan, and were so grateful for her help. She was very professional, knowledgeable, efficient, and organized while personable, kind and caring, and always willing to take that extra step to insure safety and success. She kept us aware of our responsibilities such as veterinary appoints, kennel requirements, and needed paperwork. Additionally, she made arrangements for the initial airport contact, customs, a layover in Germany, and the final turnover in South Korea. She sent continuous updates throughout Caesar’s journey, so we were able to know he was having a good trip. Starwood Pet Travel took care of our pets, worked with our vet, and smoothed out an issue at the last minute at the airport on arrival. Having the pets taken care of and their care off our plate while we dealt with the stress of travel was a game changer. We had less. stress and Jazz and Puddin benefitted from dealing with calm people who knew what they were doing!

I moved all the way from the US to Japan with my 10 year old cat. There was a lot of paperwork and red tape to handle, so I'm really glad I used Starwood to make sure I had everything done correctly. He also got a comfort stop halfway through to make sure he wasn't too stressed out, which wouldn't have happened if I'd transported him myself.

I engaged with Starwood Pet Travel about 6 months before my adopted girl Jazmine was scheduled to travel and the whole experience was very well coordinated. Ryan was very responsive regardless of what questions I had or got anxious on the phone regarding timing of flights. My girl was transported to South Africa very safely and delivered to my home. I am elated to be reunited with my fur baby.

A positive experience, we were worried about the move from USA to Uk and whilst it was stressful that was only because of what we were thinking could go wrong rather than anything bad happening! I reached out to Starwood to help me relocate my 14 yo Yorkie to New Zealand. Sage was assigned to me as my coordinator and she was amazing! She was very helpful and responsive every step of the way. We are so impressed with Starwood a d their great care of our fur baby on her trop over seas. They worked with our own Vet to get necessary vaccinations and the correct paperwork completed. Ryan was very quick with responses during the whole process! From handing Lucy over to Quinn for the start of her trip to having her brought to us in Bangkok everything went off without a hitch! The initial thought of everything you have to do is extremely overwhelming and anxiety inducing, especially if you haven't done it before. But Starwood made the process effortless for my family. From the initial quote to the cats being picked up at Heathrow, Starwood were phenomenal and extremely knowledgeable.

Rosemary Cann was our Pet Travel Coordinator and she was excellent. We couldn't have asked for a better experience. She relieved us of all stress and handled things majestically. Our vets back in the US commented how great she had been during the back and forth with them setting up paperwork and the health certificates. Everything we were anxious about dissolved immediately when we started working with her.

When the big day came for them to be picked up, it all went smoothly. Someone came to the house, went over everything, and then we got regular updates as they made their way to the airport and then through check in. Once in the air we knew there were good and then when they were unloaded we continued to get regular updates right up until I collected them.

Starwood was absolutely fantastic! I was living in America for four years with my cats and decided to move home to Ireland with my two beautiful cats, Minnow & Espeon. My pet coordinator Cassidy was remarkable, organised every detail for me and my two pets. Handing them off in Chiacago I was so nervous; there even was an issue with the crates but Starwood saved the day so my pets didn’t miss their flight! The team was so easy to reach and helpful. Picking up in Dublin was very slick with no issues. Best of all I was updated on my pets’ whereabouts and conditions the whole way through with messages and pictures. We are all one big happy family again. I would recommend Starwood to anyone wanting to travel with their animals, especially international travel. I could not have done it without the team.

Recently relocated my 3 dogs and 1 cat from PNW to Hawaii. Starwood was beyond amazing. From start to finish they were transparent, organized and professional. Starwood helped us get our golden retriever to us from PA to Germany! With this being our first international flight with a dog they helped us each step of the way. I really appreciate the thorough and constant communication, photos and all. Indi & Sati got their luxury carriers over a month in advance, giving them time to get used to their temporary homes. They're super spacious, cosy, and are equipped with convenient food & water dispensers. The girls had a layover in Frankfurt, where they stayed at a pet hotel, and got some time to eat, play, and rest. I got them in Prague, they were brought right to me after their second flight. Even considering the long journey, they were barely shaken up at all! Now, having settled at home, they still like to sleep and cuddle in their travel-homes.

We recently moved from Seattle to Portugal. With the cost of moving, we were concerned about the cost of moving our two dogs and one cat over. More stressful was the thought of them traveling. This is the second time when I worked with Starwood and Ryan to move my dogs. First time was from the mainland to Hawaii and this time from Hawaii to the mainland, both pretty significant moves. We reached out to them panicked, when another company we had been dealing with stopped communicating quite suddenly, a month before we were supposed to relocate our labradoodle from NYC to the UAE. Starwood responded quickly and were able to help under very short notice. Their portal and personalized service was extremely helpful, and they went so far as to coordinate directly with vets to gather any missing documents. Their well organized process, and pet tracking through their app made me feel confident throughout his entire journey that he was in good hands. Navigating the transfer of an animal to Australia is extremely difficult and i'm not sure i could have done it without Sage from Starwood's help. It requires months, many forms and multiple vet visits and each piece has to fall in place perfectly.

My cat went to the ER for 3 days after being evacuated in 2020, and as a former feral, is not used to change. I was extremely anxious about the whole process and how he would survive quarantine. But each step proceeded one in front of the other, and now he's here, with no blips in the process!

Our coordinator, Rosemary, has been so sweet and helpful throughout the entire journey! Peggy and Steve traveled from the US to the UK. Starwood worked with my vet on the health certificates (made it much less stressful) and when there were hiccups during planning, Rosemary handled them. I was so nervous sending my cats away, but I knew they were in good hands. I was also reassured during their journey when I would get updates on their plane take-off/landing and update photos. I would definitely recommend Starwood for international travel. My cats are happy and healthy, which is all I was hoping for!

My husband Sean & I made a last minute decision to move to the UK from the US to be near his family, we had only two weeks to move ourselves & we barely managed that. We couldn’t imagine add our beloved cats to that mess as well & we knew it just couldn’t be done. There was way too much that went into it. My husband found Starwood & spoke to Paul for our initial call & he answered all of Seans questions. He was very kind & immediately after we were so confident in them we hired them right away.

We were so nervous about the travel, our cats are our world. Our grey cat Cassie has also always struggled with anxiety & Kiki is a very hyperactive cat & we didn’t know how they were going to react or respond but Cassidy & Paul gave us a lot of reassurance which put us at ease.

We were able to track them & got updates by the drivers, who were also really kind & always reassured us that they were happy & healthy! Cassie & Kiki adjusted very quickly upon arrival. We don’t know if that would have happened if we would have went with any other company.

We hired Starwood to get our 45lb Pitbull mix from Atlanta, USA to Rome, Italy and they were amazing. Our rep, Sarah Whittington, answered my millions of questions and concerns with quick responses, clear expectations, and patience. Sarah communicated with our vet, handled documentation, handled all travel reservations and all we had to do was go to apts and prep our pup. Our dog did get stuck in ATL for a few days and Sarah took care of everything (always get the travel insurance!), we couldn't have asked for a better experience.
