Salem's Trip to Hawaii
Salem had always been a cat of two speeds: loving and friendly when the world made sense, anxious and watchful when it didn't. And nothing about the last three days had made sense — not the carriers, not the layovers, not the long stretch from Raleigh-Durham to Seattle to somewhere entirely new across the ocean.
By the time he touched down in Honolulu, he'd been traveling for what felt like forever. Any cat would have been rattled. Salem was more than rattled — he was quiet, wide-eyed, pressed low in his carrier like he was waiting for the world to stop moving.
But the moment that carrier door opened, something in him remembered what mattered. He came out meowing — soft, insistent chirps — and went straight for cuddles, nuzzling into the people he'd traveled three long days just to be near again. Nervous or not, exhausted or not, he knew exactly who he'd missed.
The days after weren't easy. New smells, new light, new sounds outside the window — it was a lot for a cat who liked things familiar. He kept to himself at first, watching from the safety of a quiet corner, taking his time the way he always did.
But a few days in, the old Salem came back. Friendly. Curious. Ready to explore.
And explore he did — nose-first into every closet, every cabinet, every gap behind the furniture, on a very serious mission to find the best hiding spots for his toys. A cat, after all, needs a good stash. And in this new home, halfway across the ocean from where he started, Salem set about building his — one perfectly hidden toy at a time.
