How Long Does It Take to Move a Pet from the US to the UK?
Pet Travel
United Kingdom
SHORT ANSWER
The fastest legal timeline for moving a dog or cat from the US to Great Britain is 21 full days after your pet's first rabies vaccination. Your pet has to be microchipped before or at the same appointment as that vaccine, and has to be at least 12 weeks old when vaccinated. In practice, a US to UK pet move takes longer than 21 days, because the flight, your housing and the final vet visits all have to line up. We recommend starting at least two to three months before your target travel date. That leaves room for a vaccine that needs more than 21 days to take effect, for booking cargo space on an approved route, and for finding a pet-friendly home.

Key Takeaways
- 1. GOV.UK requires a wait of at least 21 full days after a pet's first rabies vaccination before entering Great Britain. Day 1 is the day after the vaccine, and some vaccines need longer.
- 2. The microchip must go in before or at the same time as the rabies vaccine. If it goes in afterward, the vaccine has to be given again and the wait starts over.
- 3. Pets flying into Great Britain have to travel as cargo unless you're on a chartered private plane or traveling with a guide or assistance dog.
- 4. The final vet steps happen in the last week or so: the health certificate exam, USDA endorsement within 10 days of arrival, and tapeworm treatment for dogs 24 to 120 hours before arrival.
- 5. If your pet arrives more than 5 days before or after you, extra import rules apply. Your own move dates and your pet's flight need to stay within that window.
What Is the Fastest Legal Timeline to Move a Pet from the US to the UK?
The legal minimum is set by the rabies vaccine. According to GOV.UK's rules for bringing a pet to Great Britain, you have to wait at least 21 full days after the first rabies vaccination (or the last dose of the first course) before your pet can travel. Day 1 is the day after the vaccine is given.
Before that clock starts, two things need to be true:
- The microchip comes first. Your pet must be microchipped before, or at the same appointment as, the rabies vaccine. If the chip goes in afterward, GOV.UK says the pet will need to be vaccinated again.
- Your pet is old enough. Your vet needs proof that your pet is at least 12 weeks old before giving the vaccine.
USDA APHIS explains the count the same way. The day of vaccination is day 0, and pets must wait at least 21 days, or longer if the vaccine manufacturer requires it, before arriving at the port of entry.
Because the US is a listed country for UK pet travel, dogs and cats coming from the US don't need a rabies blood test. That's why the UK timeline is so much shorter than the timelines for rabies-free destinations like Australia.
Why 21 Days Is Rarely the Real Timeline for a US to UK Pet Move
Twenty-one days is the legal floor. It's rarely how long a move actually takes, for three reasons.
Some rabies vaccines need longer than 21 days. GOV.UK tells owners to ask their vet how long to wait, because some vaccines take longer to work. Its own example: a pet vaccinated on 1 October with a vaccine that takes 30 days to work can travel from 1 November. APHIS also notes that some manufacturers recommend 30 days.
The first UK rabies vaccine has a short life. APHIS says the first rabies vaccine given after the microchip counts as the primary vaccine for the UK and is valid for only 1 year. If your move slips past that point, your pet needs a booster first. You don't have to wait again after a booster as long as there's been no break in cover, but a missed booster restarts the whole process.
The flight and the final paperwork can't be rushed. The last vet steps have to happen in a narrow window just before travel, and cargo space on approved routes has to be booked around them.
How Long Should You Plan for a US to UK Pet Move?
For most families, we recommend starting at least two to three months before you want your pet to land. If your pet's rabies vaccine is already current and was given after the microchip, the timeline can be shorter. If your pet needs a new chip or a first rabies vaccine, start as early as you can.
As Georgiana Strait, Marketing Manager at Starwood Pet Travel, puts it: "The 21 days is the part people remember, but it's only the minimum. What really sets your timeline is how the flight, the final vet visits and your new home line up. If you start two to three months out, you have room to fix a problem instead of postponing the move."

How Flights, Housing and Vet Appointments Stack on a UK Pet Move
A US to UK pet move runs on three tracks at the same time. Problems usually start when one track is planned without the others.
The flight: cargo on an approved route
Your dog or cat can't fly in the cabin to the UK. GOV.UK's travel routes guidance says pets must travel as cargo on a plane unless you're on a chartered private plane or traveling with a guide or assistance dog. You also have to use an approved route and company, and GOV.UK warns that approved routes can change or only run at certain times of year. That means checking the route and booking cargo space early, then planning the vet appointments around the confirmed flight date, not the other way around.
Your housing: pet-friendly and ready on time
Your pet needs somewhere to go when it lands, and your own arrival date matters too. Under GOV.UK rules, if your pet arrives more than 5 days before or after you, extra import rules known as Balai rules apply. Your own move and your pet's flight should be planned within 5 days of each other.
If you're renting in England, the Renters' Rights Act overview for tenants lists changes that took effect from 1 May 2026. Tenants can ask to keep a pet, and the landlord must consider the request and should give a reason if they refuse. That change applies to England only. For more on how this affects your search, see our guide on how the Renters' Rights Act changes renting with a pet in England.
The vet appointments: early steps and final steps
Vet work comes in two groups. The early group is the microchip and rabies vaccine, which have to be done at least 21 days (or longer, depending on the vaccine) before arrival. The final group happens in the last week or so before the flight:
- Health certificate exam. APHIS says the non-commercial UK health certificate is valid for 30 days after the USDA-accredited vet signs it, but it has to be endorsed by APHIS within 10 days of arriving in the UK.
- Tapeworm treatment (dogs only). GOV.UK requires treatment no less than 24 hours and no more than 5 days before arrival in Great Britain.

Sample Countdown for a US to UK Pet Move
Here's how the pieces typically stack for a dog on a non-commercial certificate, counted back from arrival:
- 2 to 3 months out: confirm the microchip reads and was implanted before the rabies vaccine. Start the housing search and check approved routes.
- At least 21 days out (longer if the vaccine requires it): rabies vaccine given, at or after the microchip appointment.
- Several weeks out: cargo space booked on an approved route, and your own travel dates set within 5 days of your pet's.
- 7 to 8 days before departure: final exam and health certificate with a USDA-accredited vet, then APHIS endorsement within 10 days of arrival.
- 1 to 5 days before arrival: tapeworm treatment for dogs, recorded on the certificate.
Cats follow the same order without the tapeworm step.
What Can Push a UK Pet Move Timeline Back?
The most common delays come from steps done in the wrong order. A microchip implanted after the rabies vaccine means a new vaccine and a new wait. A rabies vaccine that lapses past the 1-year primary validity means a booster before travel. A flight delay can push a dog's arrival past the 120-hour tapeworm window, which GOV.UK says may mean a new treatment.
The cost of getting it wrong is high. GOV.UK says a pet that doesn't meet the rules may be put into quarantine for up to 4 months, at the owner's expense.
What Pet Owners Are Saying
Owners who've done the move often say it's more manageable than they expected once the order of steps is clear. In r/AmericanExpatsUK, one owner wrote: "First of all, good news - moving pets is not as hard as you thought. So don't panic! We moved two big dogs and one cat from the US to the UK in December 2025." (r/AmericanExpatsUK discussion)
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum time to move a dog from the US to the UK?
+
At least 21 full days after the first rabies vaccination, counting from the day after the vaccine. Some vaccines need longer, so check with your vet.
Does my pet need a rabies titer test to move from the US to the UK?
+
No. The US is a listed country, so a rabies blood test isn't required for dogs and cats coming from the US.
Can I get my pet's microchip and rabies vaccine at the same appointment?
+
Yes. GOV.UK allows the microchip to be implanted before or at the same time as the rabies vaccine. It can't go in afterward.
Does my pet have to wait 21 days after a rabies booster?
+
Not if the booster was given on time with no break in vaccine cover. If the booster is missed, your pet has to restart the vaccinations and the wait.
Can my dog or cat fly in the cabin to the UK?
+
No, unless you're on a chartered private plane or traveling with a guide or assistance dog. Pets flying into Great Britain travel as cargo.
Does my pet have to arrive on the same day as me?
+
No, but it should arrive within 5 days before or after you. Outside that window, extra import rules apply.
