When we decided to relocate from the U.S. to Spain, we quickly realized how confusing and risky international pet transport information can be—especially when you’re responsible for three beloved Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. We couldn’t afford mistakes, so after extensive research we chose Starwood Pet Transport, and it was the best decision we made. From day one, their team was exceptional. They clearly explained the process, costs, and requirements, then guided us step by step once we signed on. They coordinated directly with our veterinarians, ensured critical documents were updated correctly, handled crate purchases, and managed true door-to-door pickup and delivery. What truly set them apart was communication. We received constant updates—texts, emails, and photos—which made an emotionally difficult separation far more bearable. Knowing where our dogs were and that they were safe meant everything. Our boys arrived quickly and in perfect condition. We are profoundly grateful to the Starwood team. If you’re relocating a pet internationally, there is no better service.

Our move to Spain was made easier by our friends at Starwood Pet Travel. They made the transit of our 2 french bulldogs work without a hitch. There were so many things that had to happen, they made it easy.We were able to be in contact ahead of the travel and had all of questions answered, either with just a quick call, or by scheduling a meeting. Even when our pups travel changed due to a change in the airline schedule, all went well. Cassidy kept me informed of their progress during their travel. And, beforehand, was available to help ensure that all would go according to plan. Starwood was easy to work with, explaining the process, travel immigration rules of the airlines country. Our pets were skittish on the night of arrival. That day, they had flow from Frankfurt to Madrid, gone through immigration, and then a 3 1/2 hour van ride to be brought to us. Within an hour, they were back to their old selves and have been so ever since.cWe are glad for the help of Starwood, and Cassidy in particular.I cannot do anything but recommend them. Remember, you are choosing to move, your pets are not.

In planning our move to Spain, we attempted to book our dogs in cargo with several airlines. Each time, it was a disaster. We were quoted the incorrect information by several airlines, booked tickets, then had to cancel those and spent countless hours on the phone. I had seen Starwood Pet Travel in an internet search and finally decided to contact them. This company was awesome. From the first conversation with Ben, then with our coordinator, Ashley, they answered all of our questions and concerns. We did have some slight bumps along the way, but Starwood was there to solve the minor problems. Our dogs arrived relaxed and happy to see us again. I highly recommend this service if you are planning to move abroad. They handled customs and everything, even delivering our pets to us at our new home in Spain. We cannot thank Starwood Pet Travel for everything they did to make this a smooth transition to our new lives in Spain. Francesca, D’Amari, Timber, and Cinder also send a big sloppy kiss to you all at Starwood.

14/10 highly recommend Starwood. Great communication throughout, fantastic team members all along the way. Ryan Bole helped facilitate every step. The vet visit was convenient. We had issues with our visas that required two flight changes - Starwood was with us all the way. Our travel originated in Seattle, WA. We received updates and photos which made us feel much better. The doggos (Lily the wonder schnauzer and Sir Oliver Dachsund extraordinaire) arrived tired but well cared for. Two days later they have acclimated and are eager for many doggo adventures to come in Spain. A heartfelt thank you to Starwood!

**OUTSTANDING FROM START TO FINISH!**
We cannot thank Starwood—and specifically Sarah—enough! We moved to Spain from Maryland, and we were extremely nervous about relocating our dog, Ella. I’m certain I was exhausting with all my questions and worries, but they didn’t miss a beat. Every question I had was answered quickly and professionally. (Honestly, I don’t think Sarah sleeps!)
We flew out the same day as Ella, but due to a USDA delay in paperwork, she couldn’t travel as scheduled. Without missing a beat, they placed her in a top boarding facility near the airport, and we received frequent updates and photos. They worked quickly to obtain the corrected documentation and rebooked Ella on the next flight.
She arrived happy, healthy, and clean. I will never use another service when moving my dog—and I highly recommend that you look no further.

I used Starwood Pet Travel to move my dog from New Jersey, USA to Madrid in January 2025.
They are very organizes and responsive, their homepage is very well done and useful to understand everything you need with respect of Veterinary, Customs and Airline paperwork.
I had several conversations with my advisor Rosemary during the month previous to the travel day. We also exchange emails and texts.
They used Lufthansa for the trip which is considered the best Animal Cargo Airline.
They have veterinary service and check on the dog once ot gets to Frankfurt.
The service is not cheap but it was worthwhile because it gave me peace of mind.

So happy with Starwood's service in moving my 2 cats from Houston, TX to Madrid, Spain! Kirsty was very communicative throughout the entire process and was quick to answer my questions and concerns and everything went smoothly with Starwood working with my vet to get their health certificates in time. I was super nervous about my cats traveling without me and having a layover in Germany, but I was kept updated and sent photos of their journey every step of the way. The only thing that was a little stressful was the fact that the carrier was late to pick them up, but Kirsty took care of that and they still made it to their flight on time. Sable and Sandman were so happy to see me when they finally arrived in Madrid and are settling into our new home! Thank you so much!

Planning to relocate your pet to Spain? Whether you're heading to bustling Barcelona, sunny Seville, or the serene hills of Asturias, Spain is a beautiful and pet-welcoming destination. That said, importing pets into Spain requires careful preparation and compliance with EU animal health regulations. Here’s everything you need to know to make the move smooth, safe, and stress-free for your furry family member.
Your pet must have a 15-digit ISO 11784/11785 compliant microchip implanted before receiving any rabies vaccination. This microchip will be scanned at customs upon entry.
Spain does not require pets to have any vaccinations other than rabies. However, we recommend that pets stay up to date with the following. Do note that if your pet will be boarding, these vaccinations will be required.
Spain does not require any additional blood tests for cats, dogs, or ferrets unless your pet is traveling from an "unlisted" country.
If your pet is traveling from an "unlisted" country, then a rabies titer blood test will be required. The rabies titer test must be completed at least 30 days after their rabies vaccination and at least 3 months before traveling to the EU. This test must be completed by an authorized (USDA-Accredited) vet and the sample must be sent to an EU approved laboratory.
Pets traveling from the USA must have a Spanish EU health certificate, which must be:
This certificate is valid for:
Pets must enter Spain through a designated Traveler’s Point of Entry (POE) such as Madrid (MAD), Barcelona (BCN), or Málaga (AGP).
At arrival, customs officials may:
If traveling without your pet, the move must occur within 5 days of your own travel to qualify as a non-commercial relocation.
Although many countries ban certain breeds of dogs and/or cats, Spain does not. However, if your dog is one of the following breeds, you will need to muzzle them to go through security and register them within 3 months of arrival:
Age Restrictions
Spain does not allow the import of kittens, puppies, or baby ferrets that are less than 12 weeks old and have no rabies vaccination, nor do they allow those between 12-16 weeks whose rabies vaccine is less than 21 days old at the time of arrival.
