Bringing Your Pet to London, Step by Step

Relocating a pet to London involves navigating the UK's strict but manageable pet travel requirements, from health certifications and microchipping to the right documentation for entry through Heathrow or Gatwick. Starwood Pet Travel handles every step of this process for you, coordinating with airlines, ground handlers, and UK customs to make sure your dog or cat arrives safely and on schedule.

Whether you're moving to London for work, relocating your family, or planning an extended stay, our team manages the logistics so you can focus on the move itself.

Why airport choice matters

Both Heathrow and Gatwick have dedicated Animal Reception Centres with climate-controlled holding and on-site veterinary support. Starwood still routes most London relocations through LHR when the airline and schedule allow it, since Heathrow handles a higher volume of live animal cargo and offers more direct US routing.

What Are the Requirements to Bring My Pet to London?

Bringing a pet into the UK follows a clear sequence, and getting the order right is what lets most pets avoid quarantine entirely. For full country-level requirements, see our [UK Pet Relocation Guide].

It starts with a microchip that meets ISO 11784/11785 standards, implanted before any vaccinations. From there, your pet needs a rabies vaccination, and depending on where you're traveling from, a rabies antibody blood test at an approved laboratory.

Dogs also need vet-administered tapeworm treatment shortly before arrival. This is one of the most commonly missed steps, since the treatment window is narrow and timing it wrong can mean treatment on arrival or denied entry.

The final piece is the correct pet travel document for your route — for most pets traveling from outside the EU, that's a Great Britain pet health certificate, issued by an accredited or official veterinarian shortly before travel. This document confirms your pet meets UK entry requirements and travels with them throughout the journey. If your pet also needs an NFC or QR ID tag for easy identification in transit, this is a good point in the process to have one on hand.

Commercial vs. non-commercial pet travel to the UK

If you're traveling within 5 days of your pet's arrival and can provide an e-ticket or itinerary, your pet can usually travel as non-commercial. If your pet's route transits through the EU (for example, due to breed restrictions), you'll need to be on the exact same flight as your pet to use a non-commercial certificate.

Certificate timing differs by type: a commercial health certificate must be completed within 2 days of travel (for example, a Monday vet visit for a Wednesday flight), while a non-commercial certificate is valid for 10 days from USDA endorsement to departure.

Here's the reassuring part: when these steps are completed correctly and in sequence, quarantine is not required. The UK moved away from mandatory quarantine years ago for pets that meet these conditions. Quarantine is reserved for pets that arrive without proper documentation or that miss required testing and waiting periods. This is exactly why timing and sequencing matter, and it's where working with a pet relocation specialist makes the most difference.
