Older Pets
You've booked the flight, filed the paperwork, and said your goodbyes at drop off. Now comes the hardest part of any pet relocation: the waiting. Even with 40 years of experience behind every trip we book, the honest truth is that international travel involves things no one can fully control. Weather grounds flights. Airlines change schedules without warning. Family emergencies happen at the worst possible time, often right when your pet is already in the air or mid-layover somewhere you can't reach them.
That gap, the hours or days between drop off and reunion, is where most pet travel anxiety lives. It's also exactly why we built the Starwood Pet Protection Plan. It's available for every dog and cat relocation we manage, no matter the destination, so you're never navigating a worst case scenario without a plan already in place.
Why We Built This In
Flying with a pet is safe. Hundreds of thousands of animals travel by air every year, and serious incidents involving injury, illness, or loss are exceedingly rare. But rare isn't the same as impossible, and when it's your pet, "rare" doesn't feel very reassuring at 2 a.m. while you're refreshing a flight tracker from a different time zone.
As a company, we've moved pets for four decades, and our own team has personally gone through the process of relocating pets internationally. We know the specific kind of worry that comes with handing your dog or cat over to a crate, a cargo hold, and a system you can't personally supervise. The Pet Protection Plan exists so you can hand off the logistics and actually let go of the what-ifs. If something unexpected happens, you already know what's covered and what to do next. You're not scrambling to figure it out in the moment, and you're not stuck negotiating who pays for an unplanned night of boarding while your pet waits it out.
What the Plan Actually Covers
The Pet Protection Plan layers four types of coverage on top of every trip we book. Here's what each one means in practice.
Veterinary expenses, up to $2,500 USD
If your pet becomes ill or injured while in transit, this benefit covers the cost of emergency treatment. Say a layover runs long and your dog needs to see a vet for an unexpected issue, or a health scare comes up during a multi-leg international itinerary. This coverage is there to make sure cost isn't a factor in getting your pet the care they need, right when they need it.
One important note: pre-existing conditions aren't covered under this benefit. If your pet has a known health issue, whether that's a heart condition, anxiety that requires medication, or anything else your vet has flagged, let your Starwood coordinator know before departure. That's not just a coverage requirement, it also helps our team plan a safer, more informed trip from the very beginning, including choosing the right routing and rest stops for your pet's specific needs.
Emergency repatriation, up to $4,000 USD
Life doesn't pause for a pet relocation. If a family emergency, such as a serious illness or death, forces you to cancel your pet's travel plans while they're already in transit, this benefit covers the cost of getting your pet back to you. That includes return travel, boarding while arrangements are made, and quarantine if it's required at that stage of the journey.
This is the benefit most people hope they never need, and it's also the one that matters most when the unexpected happens on the human side of the equation rather than the pet side. Your pet's safety and return shouldn't become a secondary concern during an already difficult time.
Trip interruption, up to $1,500 USD
Airlines change confirmed flights more often than travelers expect, and when your pet is the one flying, a schedule change isn't just an inconvenience, it's a logistics problem. If your pet's already-confirmed flight is delayed by the airline, this benefit covers the costs that pile up while you wait: boarding, driver fees, and any health certificates that need to be reissued because of the delay.
This coverage applies specifically to airline-caused delays on a flight that was already confirmed. It doesn't cover changes you initiate yourself, like deciding to push back a trip for personal reasons. The distinction matters: this benefit is designed to protect you from decisions made by the airline, not to function as a flexible booking policy.
Weather interruption, up to $750 USD
Extreme heat and cold trigger airline embargoes more often than most pet parents expect, especially during peak summer and winter travel windows. Airlines routinely restrict pet cargo during heat waves or cold snaps to protect animal safety, which is the right call, but it can still leave your pet grounded somewhere unexpected. If your pet's flight is delayed or canceled because of weather, this benefit covers boarding, driver fees, and health certificates until your pet can safely fly again.
How This Plays Out in Real Trips
Most pet relocations go exactly as planned. Your pet is picked up, transported, and delivered without a single hiccup. But when something does happen, it's rarely something you could have predicted or prevented. A cargo embargo gets issued the morning of a connecting flight. A layover city gets hit with an unexpected storm. A family situation changes overnight.
In each of those cases, the difference between a stressful situation and a manageable one usually comes down to two things: having someone who knows what to do next, and not having to worry about who's paying for it. The Pet Protection Plan is built to handle the second part automatically, so our coordinators can focus on solving the first.
What This Means for You
This coverage is available for every relocation we book, from a single cat crossing the country to a family of dogs moving overseas, and it's added per pet at the time of booking. It's a small addition on top of your relocation cost, but it's designed to protect against expenses that could otherwise run into the thousands if the unexpected happens mid-trip.
If you're mid-move or just starting to plan one and want to understand exactly how this coverage applies to your pet's specific itinerary, our team can walk you through it before you book, so you know exactly what's protected before your pet ever leaves the ground.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Pet Protection Plan cost extra? Yes. It's added per pet on top of your relocation cost. Your Starwood coordinator can walk you through the pricing and what's covered before you book.
Is this the same as pet travel insurance? Not exactly. The Pet Protection Plan is a built-in coverage benefit tied to the relocation service itself, designed to cover costs related to delays, interruptions, and emergencies during transit. It's worth discussing with your coordinator how it complements any separate pet insurance policy you may already have.
What if my pet has a pre-existing condition? Tell your Starwood coordinator before departure. Pre-existing conditions are excluded from the veterinary expenses benefit, but disclosing them helps us plan a safer trip overall.
Does the plan cover changes I make myself, like postponing a trip? No. Trip interruption and weather interruption coverage apply to airline-imposed delays or cancellations on an already-confirmed flight, not to client-initiated changes.
Who do I contact if something happens during my pet's trip? Your Starwood coordinator is your point of contact throughout the journey. Reach out as soon as an issue comes up so we can help resolve it and apply the relevant coverage.
