Bringing Your Pet to Auckland, Step by Step
Relocating a pet to Auckland means meeting some of the strictest biosecurity rules in the world. New Zealand requires an import permit, a minimum 10-day stay in an approved quarantine facility, and, under its new 2026 import standard, an official ID check at least six months before your pet leaves. Starwood Pet Travel handles every step of this process for you. We coordinate with vets, the USDA, airlines, quarantine facilities, and New Zealand’s Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) to make sure your dog or cat arrives safely and on schedule.
Whether you’re moving to Auckland for work, relocating your family, or planning an extended stay in New Zealand, our team manages the logistics so you can focus on the move itself.
Quick answer: How do I bring my pet to Auckland from the US?
- Your pet needs an ISO microchip, a rabies vaccination, a rabies titer blood test, an MPI import permit, and a USDA-endorsed health certificate.
- Pets entering on or after April 1, 2027 also need an official ID check at least six months before export.
- Every pet from the US spends at least 10 days in an MPI-approved quarantine facility after landing.
- Pets arriving by air can only enter through Auckland or Christchurch airports.

Why airport choice matters
New Zealand only allows cats and dogs arriving by air to enter through Auckland or Christchurch. Your pet’s quarantine booking and import permit are both tied to its arrival, so the airport must be chosen early in the process. For an Auckland move, landing at AKL lets your pet go straight to quarantine near its new home. Starwood plans the airport, quarantine facility, and permit together so every date lines up.

What Are the Requirements to Bring My Pet to Auckland?
Bringing a dog or cat from the US to Auckland requires several things:
- An ISO-compliant microchip
- A rabies vaccination
- A rabies titer blood test
- Additional blood tests for dogs
- An MPI import permit
- A USDA-endorsed veterinary certificate
- At least 10 days in an MPI-approved quarantine facility after arrival
For full country-level requirements, see our New Zealand Pet Relocation Guide.
The process starts with a microchip that meets ISO 11784/11785 standards. Your pet then needs a rabies vaccination and a rabies titer blood test. Dogs need further blood tests in the weeks before travel, and the timing for each one is set by New Zealand’s import health standard.
Before you can apply for an import permit, you must book a place at an MPI-approved quarantine facility. The booking confirmation goes with your permit application. MPI asks that you apply at least 30 working days before you need the permit, and many airlines won’t book your pet’s flight without one.
New Zealand also has firm eligibility rules. The Dog Control Act 1996 prohibits importing any dog that belongs entirely or mostly to these breeds or types:
- Brazilian Fila
- Dogo Argentino
- Japanese Tosa
- Perro de Presa Canario
- American Pit Bull Terrier
Cats and dogs also can’t be more than 42 days pregnant on the date of shipment. Hybrid cats and dogs, other than Bengal cats, are likely to need separate approval from New Zealand’s Environmental Protection Authority.
Pets that don’t meet every requirement can be refused entry or required to stay longer in quarantine at the owner’s expense. This is exactly why timing and sequencing matter, and it’s where working with a pet relocation specialist makes the most difference.
Which Airport Should I Fly My Pet Into, and What Happens on Arrival?
For a move to Auckland, fly your pet into Auckland Airport (AKL). It’s about 13 miles south of the city center. AKL is one of only two airports where pets can enter New Zealand by air; the other is Christchurch (CHC) on the South Island.
On arrival, MPI officials inspect your pet and check its documents. Your pet then goes directly to its booked quarantine facility for a minimum of 10 days. Starwood coordinates the arrival, clearance, and quarantine transfer. Once quarantine ends, we can arrange delivery to your new home, or you can collect your pet from quarantine yourself.
What Airlines Fly Pets to Auckland, and How Should I Choose a Route?
Auckland has nonstop service from the US on several airlines:
- Air New Zealand, the national carrier
- American, seasonally from Dallas/Fort Worth and Los Angeles
Not every airline accepts pets as cargo. These are long-haul flights, often more than 12 hours, so route choice matters a great deal for your pet’s comfort and safety.
The right route also depends on your departure city, travel dates, your pet’s breed and size, and seasonal temperature restrictions. Snub-nosed breeds face extra airline limits, and summer heat at US departure airports can trigger airline embargoes. Starwood compares the options and books the safest, most direct routing available for your pet.
How Long Does the Process Take, and What Does It Cost?
For most moves to Auckland, plan on at least six to eight months or more. Pets arriving on or after April 1, 2027 need the ID check at least six months before export. Pets arriving earlier under the 2021 standard still need time for the rabies titer test, dog blood tests, and the permit, which MPI recommends applying for 30 working days ahead. Quarantine places can also fill up, so book early.
Moving a pet from the US to New Zealand typically costs between $6,000 and $10,000 or more. That includes permits, veterinary requirements, quarantine fees, and transportation. Use our cost calculator to get an estimate.
