What Might Delay My Pet's Travel Plans?

We've all experienced the frustration of flight cancellations or weather delays while traveling. These challenges also impact pet travel, presenting a unique set of obstacles that human travelers may not encounter. Here's a rundown of potential delays that can affect a pet's journey, some of which can be avoided, while others are out of our control.
Airline Embargoes
At times, airlines may impose restrictions on pet travel, be it temporary or permanent. The reasons behind such embargoes can range from extreme weather conditions like scorching heat or freezing cold to specific breed limitations or staffing issues (e.g., a COVID outbreak at the airline's cargo facility or labor strikes).

- Requires waiting until the embargo is lifted or changing airlines (if possible).
- Examples of additional costs incurred: boarding costs; a new health certificate (if one has already been issued & it will expire before the embargo lifts); airfare difference if another airline is used.
Aircraft Changes
Airlines have the flexibility to switch the aircraft assigned to a route depending on passenger and cargo needs. However, not all aircraft are equipped to accommodate pets for travel.
- Is this avoidable? NO
- Is this covered under the Starwood Pet Protection Plan? YES
- Requires changing flights (if the airline operates more than one flight per day from that city, and that flight is operated by a pet-friendly aircraft), airlines, or departure cities.
- Examples of additional costs incurred: boarding costs; a new health certificate (if one has already been issued & it will expire before the embargo lifts); airfare difference if another airline is used.
The Wrong Kennel Size
Airlines have strict guidelines regarding the size of the travel kennel your pet will be flying in, and this is crucial for their safety and comfort. At Starwood, we strive to ensure that the recommended or provided kennel is the perfect fit for your furry friend. To achieve this, we count on you to supply us with accurate measurements and high-quality photos, allowing us to make the best decision for your pet's journey.
- Is this avoidable? USUALLY. To prevent this issue, you can supply us with precise measurements of both your pet and the kennel you currently own, along with clear photos. Trust us to prioritize your pet's comfort by opting for a slightly larger kennel, even if it means higher initial airfare costs. Alternatively, consider letting us provide the travel kennel for you instead of using your own.
- Is this covered under the Starwood Pet Protection Plan? NO
- Requires replacing the travel kennel & rebooking the flight.
- Examples of additional costs incurred: boarding costs; a new health certificate (if one has already been issued & it will expire before the embargo lifts); cost of a new travel kennel; airfare increase because of a larger kennel; additional cost for new check-in attempt by our driver.
A Kennel That is Not IATA-Compliant
As mentioned earlier, airlines adhere to strict regulations set by IATA, the International Air Transport Association, when it comes to the construction of travel kennels. Details such as the size of air openings and how the top and bottom halves of the kennel are connected are crucial. Even a slight deviation from these standards could result in rejection by the more meticulous airlines.
- Is this avoidable? USUALLY. Prevent any issues by supplying us with accurate photos and measurements of your current travel kennel, or opt for us to provide the kennel instead of using your own.
- Is this covered under the Starwood Pet Protection Plan? NO
- Requires replacing the travel kennel & rebooking the flight.
- Examples of additional costs incurred: boarding costs; a new health certificate (if one has already been issued & it will expire before we can get a new flight); cost of a new travel kennel; airfare increase because of a larger kennel; additional cost for new check-in attempt by our driver.
Incorrect Paperwork
Starwood makes every effort to work with your veterinarian to ensure we have all the necessary documents for your pet. However, there are instances where vet offices may not adhere to our guidelines or utilize our pre-filled health certificates.
- Is this avoidable? USUALLY. Ensure a smooth process by confirming that your vet's office collaborates with us and follows the instructions provided by our Vet & Docs Team for completing all paperwork accurately. It's advisable to share a copy of the health certificate immediately after the vet visit, allowing us to address any errors promptly and avoid unnecessary delays. For added convenience, consider entrusting Starwood with the final vet paperwork at one of our reputable veterinary partner clinics, a service included in our Premium package.
- Is this covered under the Starwood Pet Protection Plan? NO
- Requires getting a new health certificate & usually rebooking the flight.
- Examples of additional costs incurred: boarding costs; a new health certificate; a rebooking fee.
Although setbacks can be frustrating and sometimes out of our control, it's essential to acknowledge that unforeseen circumstances may arise. However, in instances where we have a say, we highly recommend that pet owners leverage the expertise of seasoned professionals in pet transportation, such as Starwood, to ensure a smooth and successful journey for their furry companions.
